Light is one of the most potential zeitgebers. The phenomenon of the existence of light has allowed discovering DARK MATTER. Even the gravitational lensing could not have been discovered without this quantum particle known as PHOTON.
By referring light we must be fully aware that we are referring to its energy and the frequency parameters and not only the wavelength (spectrum).
As the ear has dual functions for audition and balance, Eyes have a dual role in detecting light for a wide range of behavioral and physiological functions apart from sight (source). .

For example, In humans, Molecules which are chromophores’, absorbs the wavelengths emitted by the light source. MITOCHONDRIA, in these we have a specific molecule known as Cytochrome C oxidase, which is responsible to produce energy within MITOCHONDRIA. In the same way, plants and other living beings are light dependant. Without light, our planet cannot be named as the living planet
The eye is undoubtedly our brain's brain. We all are aware of Fovea, Cones, Rods, Iprgcs, and the melanopsin, the rhodopsins. However, cohesively if we need to get familiar to their arrangements in a simpler way it must be understood in two different formats.
First, the Limbic part
of our brain which is composed of Amygdala- primarily responsible for our Emotions, Hippocampus- primarily responsible for our emotional memories & the Cingulate cortex - primarily responsible for our emotional judgments. it gets triggered thru our visual part of the absorption of the light thru the sets of genes-cells-molecules-neurons and finally allowing us to enjoy & having a feel-good factor or vice-a-versa.
Second, the nonvisible part of light
thru our sets of ON-SET or OFF-SET ganglion cells thus The SCN drives the circadian rhythm in pineal melatonin production (that is, high melatonin levels at night and low melatonin levels during the day) via a multisynaptic pathway that projects to the Paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN)
The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) . Core body temperature (CBT) and the pineal hormone melatonin are the most commonly used phase markers of this rhythm.
.Which is the main triggering cause of our biological rhythmic clock to be aligned with the natural day/night clock.
Similarly one of the examples of light triggering our pituitary gland and thus giving exponential rise to the cortisols, when too much of increase in cortisol is too much of activity & which lowers the immune activities because of which they are unable to kill the cancer cells at an early stage & thus can lead to the cancer
The impacts of visual and nonvisual forms of light are :
- Retinal damage
- Brain fatigue
- Age-related Macular disorder
I have always considered people associated with the lighting industry as no less than the doctors. The purpose of choosing an appropriate light and its effect for any building (indoors), green walls or landscaping, is not only the involvement of commercial or technical aspects, but it’s the series of physiological & neurobiological factors
Thus in a gist LIGHT IS NOT ONLY THE GOVERNOR OF THE UNIVERSE BUT THE GOVERNOR OF HORMONES....I am proud to be a part of the lighting industry...
